How To: do Fresher year!
12 September 2018 • advice, first year, Freshers, freshers week, grad life, howto, university
Yes,
yes I know. As a graduate, I’m kind ‘past it’. However, as an
aspiring MA student and a proud holder of an NUS Extra card (thanks
to a loophole), I like to think I’m not too far out of the bubble.
Oh,
I am also about to become a big sis to a Fresher. That’s where this
post started from; the two of us chatting about her buying a specific
fluorescent events wristband for her first week (see tip #2) and me
going off on a tangent, giving out a few of my best tips on uni life, made me realise there was a list that
needed writing on here. Read on to get a few tips on Fresher Year,
from this wise old graduate!
(To
spice this lecture of a blog post up, there will be Fresher year
photos of me throughout. You’re welcome)

How to: fly (in a plane, anyway).
13 August 2018 • flying, Grace's travels, howto, travel, travel blogger
I
have flown a lot in my life; I'm very fortunate in that the Latter parents
have always been keen travellers and I have some very adventurous
friends – some of whom live permanently
abroad. Growing up with these people around me could be why I crave
and adore taking trips here and there, or maybe it was something in
me anyway that's been nurtured and encouraged appropriately? Who even knows!
Before
I start to psychoanalyse myself (one of my favourite forms of
torture), I'll get to the point of this post. It's a little different
to my usual stuff (i.e. intense health stories, ridiculous anecdotes...and fun bookish geek-outs) but I wanted to share some
tips on flying!
What is self care?
8 August 2018 • howto, self care
Self
care has become a huge deal in recent years. More people are taking
time for themselves – and treating themselves – using the
#selfcare hashtag liberally and actually saying out loud that they
need it.
But
self care is often seen in soft focus. The truth is, it’s not
always a photogenic mix of bath bombs, glossy magazines and milky tea
on rainy days. Sometimes it’s much smaller, but with equally enormous results.
How To: get a tattoo. (The Olive Fox archive)
14 April 2018 • archive, how to, howto, tattoo, tattoos, The Olive Fox
I
love every single one of my tattoos. I currently have 13 and am
nowhere near done, because oh my
gosh I have so many ideas and that thing they say when you get your first tatt is true - it opens the floodgates and
suddenly you want MORE, MORE, MORE!
Now,
in my experience, I've found that there are certain things that need
to happen when you are prepping for and then getting a tattoo. I
would like to take this opportunity to educate y'all and hopefully
help you avoid any discomfort* if you ever wish to get inked!
*cannot promise to avoid all discomfort. Tattoos hurt. I can't help with that, lol.
How Not To: get a hangover! (The Olive Fox archive)
20 July 2017 • drinking, hangover, how not to, how to, howto, The Olive Fox
There's
nothing quite like a morning after to really bring you down from the
night before. It doesn't matter if you spent the night happily
dancing, laughing with friends and maybe even flirting with a certain
super-cute someone at the bar...waking up with a splitting headache,
sore throat and swirling tummy will always dampen the memories and
the whole mood of the morning. Ughh.
Maybe
this particular morning after will be it; the hangover is
so bad that it makes you want to swear off alcohol, refuse any future
nights out and have a hardcore detox. I mean, is there much point
going out and getting crazy if it just means you'll feel like this
every morning after?!
WELL,
hold up. What if I told you that the feeling could go away? That if
you follow a few of these simple steps (yes, I'm aware I sound like a
fake health company internet scam right now, bear with me) you could
bid farewell to those grim hangover feels?
I
have always been semi-famous in my friendship group for managing to
avoid or stave off hangovers. No, really. When I first started going
out at 16/17, I would down alcopops, drain bars of Malibu and knock
back £1 shots like there was no tomorrow – because, for me,
tomorrow wasn't a problem. Then all through uni I'd be the envy of
everyone in the 9am lectures in last night's clothes with makeup
melting off and emergency sick bags stashed under their desks. And
these days I can sink 5 double gins in the pub with my colleagues
with an important 9am work call scheduled the next day, no sweat. My
gosh, I love gin...

How To IKEA. (The Olive Fox archive)
21 October 2016 • how to, howto, IKEA, The Olive Fox
I
recently went to IKEA with my mum to pick out the perfect piece of
furniture the parents could give me as a birthday present. It was a
truly magical experience. Having said that, it may have been that
magical because my mama and I were adhering to the rules and
listening to the advice we'd been given by friends before we set foot
in that mythical environment. We joke that IKEA is a country –
because my little sis once thought it was, and we don't blame her.
It's another world, really!
So,
as a recent visitor, here is my advice on all things IKEA...
Snackage.
I
seem to include this in most of my How To type posts, but yeah, snack
like a gorgeous little bird, all day. IKEA drains your energy and
gets you excited all at once – plus you need maximum protein for
all the joyful jumping around when you see that perfect bedding set
or sink for the bathroom!
